[NEWS] The Wedge is Back!

Getting High in the Haight: The Wedge is Back
Article and Photos By grace chen

Floating high up here and feeling free -- it's so intensely pleasurable. I've been doing it for years but this year everyone is doing it. The wedge this season soars to new heights for spring and it's an intense rush.

Nearly every shoemaker and store is getting high. There's no better place to find it than in Haight Ashbury where plenty of places allow you to take a hit. Both Super Shoe Biz and Shoe Biz are on the act. Try Marc by Marc Jacobs' green striped espadrille ($185) with a matching ankle tie. It comes in confections of red, pink and orange too. Fornarina also plays up the wedge look with a wood base and rainbow ties ($92).

Shoe Biz offers, albeit at a conservative dosage of elevation, a trip of primary colors with these rides. Miss Daisy's buttercup wedges ($74) with gold straps and a red flower add a kick despite its conservative two inch boost. There's also a gorgeous green-aqua version ($74) with a Chinese painting displayed on that expansive wedge heel. A silk ankle strap with metal eye-hooks straps you into the shoe so you won't lose your bearings.

Further west on Haight is Ambiance. Here moderate prices match the moderate height. The pale blue floral 2" wedge by Unlisted ($39) is a painless fix for those on a budget. Seychelles also offers a moderate 3" wedge ($75) in dark brown studded with this season's biggest look, turquoise stones.

And Villains! What an appropriate name. This store offers its own unique selection. They not only procure a selected cut of various fashionable wedges and platforms but also create their own version under their own label. However the most styling one is the black and white striped "Cossette" ($96) by farylrobin. The best thing about getting high in this number, and really all of them, is that the come down … isn't so bad.
