Artwear: Fashion and Anti-fashion
Decisively anti-fashion, this collection of 120 pieces of wearable art from the past 35 years seems more at home hanging in the Legion of Honor gallery than any closet. Since many of the objects are from Bay Area designers and artisans, there's a sense of familiarity at work here; however, selections ranging from 1960s Haight-Ashbury hippie gear to locally designed kimonos also bear both pop art and non-Western influences. Meanwhile, one-of-a-kind pieces, including limited edition garments and performance-specific costuming, offer a further fusion of art, craft, and clothing design. For a repeat visit, check out the museum again in August, when a quarter of the display will be rotated. (EF/NC from Flavorpill)
