[EVENT] Fashioning Resistance to Militarism -OAK

May 31, 2005, 7-9pm
Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, 1428 Alice Street, Oakland, CA
Fashioning Resistance to Militarism is an opportunity to raise awareness of how militarized our society has become and we are using fashion as a lens! Whether it is in the cars we drive (SUVs and HUMVEES) to the aggressive military recruitment in our schools to the clothes we wear (camouflage, cargo, etc.), we are seeing every aspect of our society reflecting the normalization and commercialization of war and violence.

Fashion Resistance to Militarism exposes how militarized our society has become--and we're using fashion to demonstrate this!

Whether it is in the cars we drive (HUMVEES), to the games children play, to the clothes we wear (camouflage), our society has become increasingly militarized. The danger of our desensitization to this is the normalization of war and violence, which facilitates an aggressive and hyper-militarized domestic and foreign policy--like the one we have today.

Cynthia Enloe, a prominent feminist scholar and peace activist, will be among our guests that evening. She writes, "Militarization is a sneaky sort of transformative process. Sometimes it is only in the pursuit of de-militarization that we become aware of just how far down the road of complete militarization we've gone. Rep. Barbara Lee pulled back the curtain in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks when she cast the lone vote against giving George W. Bush carte blanche to wage war. The loneliness of her vote suggested how far the militarization of Congress--and its voters back home--has advanced. In fact, since September 11, publicly criticizing militarization has been widely viewed as an act of disloyalty."

The evening will feature runway creations by several bay area designers and artists, including Studded by Chocolate Baby Designs. The show will be emceed by spoken word poet Aya De Leon, and features dance by Do Hee Lee, poetry by Cesar Cruz, music by DJ Emancipacion, and many more!
